Keeping Your Garden Rooms Warm and Dry

All our garden rooms are built with a breathable damp-proof membrane as standard. This protective layer sits behind the external cladding and helps keep your structure dry by stopping moisture from entering while still allowing trapped air to escape.

This balance of protection and airflow prevents condensation build-up and keeps the internal structure healthy over time.

By allowing your garden room to breathe while staying protected, the membrane helps maintain a warm, dry and long-lasting garden room from the inside out.

Our breathable damp-proof membranes are specifically designed for timber garden buildings, and are typically composed of multi-layer woven or spun-bonded polypropylene. Unlike basic plastic sheeting or polythene, our breathable membranes won’t trap moisture inside your walls.

This is essential for any SIP or timber garden building, as it prevents condensation, mould and other long-term structural issues.

Damp-Proof Membrane FAQs

What is a breathable membrane and why is it used in garden rooms?

A breathable damp-proof membrane protects your garden room from external moisture while allowing internal vapour to escape. This keeps your garden room dry.

How is a breathable membrane different to standard plastic or polythene sheeting?

Unlike polythene, which traps moisture inside, a breathable membrane allows the building to release vapour.

This prevents condensation and reduces the risk of mould or hidden damp issues.

Is a breathable membrane necessary with SIP panels?

A breathable membrane is highly recommended. Even though SIP panels are well insulated, the membrane adds an extra level of moisture protection, helping your building stay solid and reliable over time.

Is the membrane visible once the garden room is finished?

No, it will be completely hidden behind the external cladding, so it won’t affect the appearance of your garden room.

Are the membranes fully waterproof?

Yes, they’re designed to block external moisture while still allowing the structure to breathe from the inside.
